How to read your Cholesterol test
A cholesterol test, also known as a blood lipid panel or lipid profile, is a blood test that can measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood. Knowing your cholesterol levels can help to determine if you are at risk of cardiovascular problems like heart disease or stroke, and you can make timely changes to your lifestyle to lower your cholesterol levels.
Total cholesterol: This is your total cholesterol amount.
LDL cholesterol: This is a type of “bad” cholesterol, and too much of it can cause fatty deposits in your arteries, which reduces blood flow and increases the risks of heart disease.
HDL cholesterol: This is the “good” cholesterol that helps to clear away LDL cholesterol, thus keeping your blood flowing smoothly and protecting against heart disease.
Triglycerides: This is a type of fat in the blood. When you eat, excess calories are converted into triglycerides and stored away in fat cells. High triglyceride levels are associated with things like being overweight, eating too many sweets or drinking too much alcohol, smoking, being sedentary, or having diabetes with elevated blood sugar levels.
Non-HDL cholesterol: This is your all of your “bad” cholesterol, calculated by subtracting your HDL cholesterol from your Total cholesterol. Some
TG to HDL ratio: This ratio is calculated by taking your Triglycerides and dividing by your HDL cholesterol. A high TG to HDL ratio indicates a significant risk of heart attack and stroke.
